Another season, another disappointment for San Diego fans. The Clippers, despite having the electric scoring duo of Mark Price and Rex Chapman at guard, only scored 97 points a game. Despite having Causwell and Thorpe in the frontcourt, they gave up 103 a game. Despite drafting a talented player in Doug Christie in the last draft, they ended the season having traded the rookie for another pick in this year's draft. It's no surprise that Clippers fans feel like the franchise has given up on them.
Which makes pulling the number one pick in the draft out of the bucket so very, very important to this team. With several stars hitting free agency, and no seeming chemistry on the team, they need a spark, and they hope to find it in this draft. Considering each and every option, the Clippers nonetheless find the choice easy. Only one player seems to offer the franchise-altering potential they need.
And so the Clippers are proud to announce as their number one pick...
Grant Hill, forward from Duke University.
"Grant has the capability to not only transform this basketball team, but I think transform the league," says the Clippers GM. "He can catch defenders off the dribble, pull up for a jumper, even hit the three pointer. But he also can pass the ball like a point guard, and he has a vision for the game that only the best floor generals have. Yet, make no mistake, he is a forward who will hit the boards and challenge in the post. Hill will change the way we play basketball and we are very excited to welcome him to San Diego."
