San Antonio has released it's NEW LOGO for the upcoming season:
They have also petitioned the league to have these available for the team to come out of locker room to the court:
Finally, they desire the players to have these on court during playing time:
Yes, the Spurs have completed free agency, and have compiled a 15 man team that encompasses 156 years of GAH experience!
Awards compiled by the roster:
MVPs: 10
Rookie of Year: 4
6th Man of Year: 1
1st Team All-GAH: 33
2nd Team All-GAH: 16
3rd Team All-GAH: 7
1st Team All-GAH Defense: 7
2nd Team All-GAH Defense: 6
1st Team All-GAH Rookie: 8
2nd Team All-GAH Rookie: 1
GAH Championship Trophies: 7
Word has it Spurs GM also made a call to Paul Westphal, and asked if he would come out of retirement for a year to join this club. He politely declined, stating he will stick to coaching.
So.....all the accolades above kind of point out the obvious: Most all these guys are past their prime by several years. Do they have any fuel in the tank left to be successful? It'll be a fun season to watch, if not for simply applauding these players that are most likely hanging up their sneakers in the next season or two.
Here is the roster:
PG:
Norm Nixon: Late signee that really had team worried that they wouldn't have playmaking ability. Nixon looks to be the main PG who we will try and squeeze 30 minutes out of
Fat Lever: Another late signee. Fat's second stint with the Spurs. Still good defender and can rebound well for a point. Should be backup to Norm
Brad Davis: Was the only PG and would've been hard to get him to stay healthy as a starter. Now finds himself 3rd in depth, but he won't hurt the team if/when called upon
(**47 years of PG experience above....wow!)
SG:
Walter Davis: Crazy mad career...will be included always in GAH top 5 players of all time. Never found a trophy. The 39yr old will start (of course as he missed 3 starts in 17 seasons only). Will be called upon to give 32 minutes if he can.
Vernon Maxwell: Chucker extraodinaire! Can fill up the basket.....but on this squad we don't require this we feel too often. He probably will be inactive most of the time...unless of injuries...with Bowen backing up SG.
SF:
Larry Bird: The 'other' 5-time MVP on the squad. His defense has left his game, but he still is a player that is cerebral enough to always make right decisions, and make players around him better. Looking for him to give ~32mpg as well.
Cedric Maxwell: Not sure how you can say a 17yr vet with a career 58%FG 85%FT and 15PPG is not a household name. Cedric should fill in as backup very nicely.
Bruce Bowen: Bowen had a great rookie season, and finished 2nd in AllStar game 3pt shootout. His strength is defense, and he will be used this season as backup SG to Sir Walter.
PF:
Larry Nance: Spurs just couldn't sit and watch Larry's market value disappear in FA, and had to make a claim for him to return to San Antonio. Lucky for us he accepted......and now probably finds himself starting at the PF slot. We feel he might complement Bird/Davis/Sampson well. Another career 15PPG 56%FG guy, who can block shots. Logjam at PF, so Larry will be battling for minutes
P.J. Brown: Was pencilled in as the starter prior to Nance signing. Brown brings defense and rebounding, so he could start if we find the need. Brown's last year of rookie contract.....we will see if we can keep him happy. If we need rebounding, he will be in.
Kevin McHale: Where there's a Bird, there has to be a McHale. Post game is still there, but shortness on defense might have his minutes very small. Another career 56%FG guy.
Terry Mills: A guy that was the Spurs MVP last year, and took over the scoring duties for us when Sampson went down, leading us to our first ever division title, and we might see him not play much at all this year! We signed him for 5-years, so we have time to repair any damage he might feel by sitting this season. But with the theme of Spurs, Terry probably will only be seen if we are in the tank or injuries crop up. (Sorry Terry)
C:
Ralph Sampson: Missed most of last season again with injury, but was rewarded 2-yr max contract to stay. Should be fun year surrounded by the legends. We can keep him back down to ~30mpg again to hopefully keep him healthy
Chris Gatling: Our '6th man' that has played good minutes at C and PF the past two years now looks to be relegated to backup C. Good defense, good rebounding, and good FG%. Will need in the West given the opposing talents
Melvin Turpin: A trade last year brought Turpin over from Knicks, and he turned back the clock and had a great season starting when Ralph went season. He had a great playoff series versus Shaq before the Nuggets did us in. Glad to bring him back....as again the Centers of the West require many bodies to bring to the table.
Overall Guesstimate: I think we can win 47 games...using the offense and free throw shooting to outscore teams. We will struggle defensively. Nuggets I think still has the division, and then Admiral joins the Jazz in the Midwest because some 'dope' interim GM traded him. Suns had lots of injuries but still was playoff bound. They should be better. Rockets are still young but will start winning as well. Going to be a good division race this year.
Proposed Starting Lineup: Ralph Sampson - Larry Nance - Larry Bird - Walter Davis - Norm Nixon
***NOTE: Four of these five players were the ALL-GAH 1st team in '83
By the way....ticket prices have almost doubled for the Spurs....taking advantage of the fans chance to 'see them one more time'!
