Following the Celtics' sweep of the Pelicans in New Orleans, nearly all predicted the train would keep on rolling in Beantown. And indeed, if the first two games were anything to follow, the 25-25 tie after the first period appeared to set the stage for another win for the guys in green. But then the Pelicans finally took command in a second quarter for the first time all Finals, dominating 27-17 to go into the locker room with their first double-digit lead of the Finals, after having been up by 2 and tied in Games 1 and 2 respectively. But could it hold? No, said Boston, who roared back with a 35-23 third quarter to go up by 2 points heading into the final quarter. And it was there, in the last period, that New Orleans had their finest hour yet, curbstomping the Celtics 37-17 and walking out with a smoke and mirrors 117-94 win that was far closer than the scoreline indicated, and shockingly made it a 2-1 series.
For the first time, the Pelicans' defense was on display, as they overall held Boston to 38.6% shooting, while hitting 50% of their own shots. The Celtics also wasted their 3 point shooting, converting just 3 of their 18 attempts.
Guess who stepped up to defend Lebron James this time? None other than Ron Artest AKA Metta World Peace
Perhaps the most stunning performance of all came from someone who wasn't even Player of the Game, and that's Metta World Peace. After Shane Battier was limited to 10 minutes due to foul trouble, World Peace came in and held Lebron James to 28 points on a dreadfully inefficient 9 of 24 shooting, 0 for 5 from 3 point range. Lebron did add 5 rebounds and 3 steals, however, despite also coughing up 3 turnovers. But that's not all. World Peace also nailed 7 of 14 shots, 3 of 5 from downtown for an impressive 17 points, 10 rebounds, a block, and a steal. Also contributing off the Pelicans bench was Andris Biedrins who pitched a near perfect 9/10 for 18 points in just 10 minutes
But the official PotG award went to Derrick Rose, who racked up 30 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists (albeit with 4 turnovers) on 11 of 26 and missing all 4 of his long-range efforts. He also completely shut down his opposite number, Jarrett Jack, who launched 22 tries, and made just 7 of them en route to 19 points, 6 assists, and 6 rebounds. But perhaps the most telling stat of all for Boston is that just 3 players broke double-digits, a first in the Finals. That distinction went to James, Jack, and Tyson Chandler, who dominated the paint with 17 points, 11 rebounds, 2 steals and 4 blocks on 50% shooting, but it wasn't near enough. Game 3 also marked the first time this series that rookie Thomas Robinson failed to net a double-double, finishing with just 5 points and 5 rebounds on 2/8.
