While Philly is planning to retain Pervis Ellison and still has Arvydas Sabonis for one more year, the center position was considered the area of greatest need for the 23rd pick. Daryl Dawkins will be offered another contract, but even if he and Ellison both return, there will be a need for more big man depth over the coming seasons. Ellison is expected to play mostly power forward and Dawkins will have another year or two at most. So with their second selection in this year's first round, the Sixers selected Sean Rooks out of Arizona. Rooks is a solid rebounder and defender and should have time to develop as the third stringer this season, with an eye to becoming the long term backup for Sabonis.
