Just thinking about what we can do with this league moving forward with the ever decreasing likelihood that we'll ever get close to a full 28 GMs again.
What about abolishing the East and West conferences and bringing in the National and American conferences instead, with 14 teams in each. Put all the surviving GMs in one conference (National) and have the whole American conference on CPU. Then create a custom schedule where each conference plays the other teams in their conference 4 times for a total of 52 games (4x13). No games are scheduled against the other conference, meaning it's essentially two distinct leagues with the respective champions meeting at the end of the season in the GAH championship series. There would be no trading between conferences during the season, so players would only move conferences via free agency and possibly during an off-season trade window where the human GMs of the National can make deals with the CPU American teams.
The schedule could be constructed so that the games were played in pairs, playing the same team twice in a sim. 26 sims would cover the regular season and we would always have a 2 game sim against one opponent, making it much easier to strategize. The reduced sim load would mean Manu has to sim less often, so hopefully less of a burden for him to keep the league running. It should be easier to fill 2-3 GM spots and ensure a full league and if we ever get a waiting list, those GMs could run American conference teams while waiting for an opening.
National Conference
New Jersey Nets
Denver Nuggets
Los Angeles Lakers
Chicago Bulls
Milwaukee Bucks
Atlanta Hawks
Portland Trailblazers
San Antonio Spurs
Washington Bullets
Houston Rockets
Miami Heat
Cleveland Cavaliers
plus two others (try to sign up two GMs and let them choose)
The National Conference Championship would be for bragging rights between us, then we'd all get behind the winner vs the evil American Conference Champion.
