Indiana comes off a championship season, where the cards fell in their favor: Key injuries had early in season, but none come playoff time; Veterans with defensive prowess had gas left in their tank to limit superstar wings faced in every round; Towers dominated the paint, and when one had foul issues, the other assumed solo responsibility to continue the paint prominence. (And the refs didn't allow anyone to touch the Towers...as we got charity stripe visits o'plenty)
The team's interim GM created a 2-year plan, for when the next time one of the Towers (Admiral) is up for a new contract, so the 'core' is still all returning, and just 6 roster depths slots are open. (Although some from last years run could be offered their spot again this year)
The spots opened are in every position: 1C, 1 PF, 1 SF, 1 SG, 2 PGs (MRR plays 2)
So...whatever was available at the 1-25 pick didn't matter position, we could choose who we thought would be a benefit to the squad.
Denver selected PG Hunter, whom we targeted to be a good defender...but suspect on handling/passing skills. So this made our choice become easier to make the selection.
With the 25th pick in round 1 of the 1993 GAH draft, Indiana selects:
PG Bobby Hurley, Duke University
Hurley is a immediate talent at PG passing/handling, and can be thought to be of use in a rotation for the Pacers. He is very intelligent, and Coach K is already asking him to coach for him, so it shows he knows the game.
He will not be an offensive weapon, and will struggle on the defensive side, so help will be needed when facing PG offensive weapons. But the Towers should have his back if a drive past Hurley is made. With Haywoode Workman assuming the starting PG role.....Hurley could find minutes, unless Rickey Green, or another veteran PG, comes in to steal the backup slot.
Thanks!
