Key was to try and bring in a few players to help out the aging vets which were the glue to a winning team. Second key...(and probably more importantly), was to leave enough Cap Space for next year for Admiral (which was done....16+mil in space showing next year)
Starters....hereby referred to as: DA-CREW!!!
Dream (C Hakeem Olajuwon)
Admiral (PF David Robinson)
CroationSensation (SF Toni Kukoc)
Rooney (SG Sarunas Marciulionis)
Woody (PG Haywoode Workman)
Returning Players
Hakeem Olajuwon: Plays C mostly for the club. Nothing to say
(or needed to be said about who he is, what he does)
David Robinson: Plays PF mostly but spells Hakeem at C. Try to have one of the two on court all times. Final year of contract
Roy Hinson (KingRoy): Played big last year with Admiral injury. Played 4&5 in playoffs. Will mostly see backup C time. Trying to lower Twin Towers regular season minutes a tad
Toni Kukoc: Turned out as a good complement to the Towers. Will see same time as last year
Terry Tyler (Thunder): Will see time when defense required versus good opponents SF. Might see drop in time though..and playoff (if we get there) time increase. Final year of contract
Michael Ray Richardson (Sugar Ray): Three player share of SG 48 minutes to change this year. MRR will see time but less then last year, and playoff increase when defense needed. Final year of contract
T.R. Dunn (Flick): Same as MRR. Less court time regular season. Playoffs maybe a different story. Final year of contract
Haywoode Workman: Was promised the starting job after Rickey Green contract expired in last year's re-up. Might be biggest question mark of year for Pacers. Can he lead the team as starter?
Anthony Avent (AA): Almost no time last year. Most likely the same this year. Final year of contract
Drafted Rookies:
Bobby Hurley (Coach): Will be a slow project player. Has tools to be a good point guard. Will see time versus struggling franchises only to begin with
Geert Hammink: As much as I wanted to have a LSU center on this team too...he Won't make team
Veteran players coming over in trade:
None
Players signed in FA:
Rickey Green (LFPG-leagues fastest point guard): Big to have him sign a 1-yr minimum to be the safety net in case Workman struggles or gets hurt
Sarunas Marciulionis: New SG in town...can he play defense to stay on court in all situations? Good inside/outside game and draws fouls to boot
Tom Chambers (TC): Should see most of the PF reserve role, and brings yet more inside scoring and foul drawing
C.A. Jones (Charles A): Smaller man that plays big. Good rebounding, blocks, steals, and doesn;t hurt you on offense side. Limited role given the people in front of him, but a great bench player to have in case of injuries
: Open slot remaining
Players not returning:
Otis Birdsong: Was going to offer him to come back if Sarunas didn't come. Was great for the team last year
Danny Ferry: Stretch 4 that did ok but saw very little time overall last year
Randy Breuer: Again very limited in time, but is a decent bench player to clog middle
Maurice Cheeks: Actually did have him play in playoffs to help with defending all the great SGs we faced. Giving Hurley a chance instead
Chuck Person: Saw no time. Hopefully he can latch on with a new team and see court time.
