Frustrating end to 1993 season, and embarrassing playoff appearance, has the GM changing focus again. Seeing countless SGs (some that don't even start) doubling and tripling their ppg average against us has taken its toll. A change in strategy for this year is an all out defensive mindset....and offense will simply happen or not. Some players (most, actually) get there final shot to prove they are GAH material in San Antonio or not.
Good news is if we find success, we have the ability to offer contracts to all and retain a working system almost entirely.
Good news#2 is if we do NOT find success, we have four players under contract, and only $9m in cap used. We have seen the shrewdness of the Charlotte GM this past off-season, and are ready and willing to tear down the house, and use $35m in space to go after the "hum-drum" list of FAs next year like: drexler/jordan/thomas/wilkins/king/smits/seikaly/thompson/anderson/williams/jackson/barros/grant/nance/robinson/smith/lewis/cummings/lever/scott/kj/kellogg/ellison/murdock/walker/starks/mckey/majerle/horry/williams/sampson/fleming/mills/causwell/armstrong/bird/smith/pippen/davis/miller
(I'm hoping some will like to sign max deals that some of the current teams cannot match, or find their players not that happy and want a change. So everyone make sure you sign cancers if you own the players above today! )
Returning Players
Ralph Sampson: Final Year of contract. Might try getting him 36mpg...as I have lots of depth if he gets hurt
Vern Fleming: Will play 1 and 2 in reserve role this year. More offense then defense though. Final year of contract
Terry Mills: Last ditch effort for us to make him a primary scoring threat and start. Final year of contract
Vernon Maxwell: If team needs backcourt offense, he will see time. If we are doing fine without, he won't get much
P.J.Brown: Will rotate around mostly in 3 and 4 positions again. Will start at 4 if Mills flops
Chris Gatling: Bench 4/5....but did play well starting at 4 last year. Lots of rotations so he will see time
Marcus Liberty: Has to show something. Should see court in defense sets. Final year of contract
Sam Mack: See very little time for him. 3pt specialist but no defense, which is our focal point this year. Final year of contract
Bobby Phills: Has some skills for defense and 3 ball. Will get good time this year I believe. Final year of contract
Drafted Rookies:
Bruce Bowen: Play 2 and 3, depending on opponent. Love the schedule now, to be able to play/strategize truly at the other team each sim! Hopefully he does what we desire...lock down good scorers
Adonis Jordan: Won't make team
Marty Conoln: Won't make team.
Veteran players coming over in trade:
Melvin Turpin: Coming off a major injury. Good inside presence. Give us options to always have good scoring from C position, and play defense/rebound. Final year of contract
Players signed in FA:
Lester Conner: Main focus all FA, and we did get him to come. Will play mostly 1, but could play 2 at times just to kill opposing backcourt offense. 1 year contract
Randy Brown: Defense in the full court should make him get minutes this year. 1 year contract
: Roster spot hopefully to get another personal fav of mine finally on roster
: Roster spot to hopefully get a previous player back into uniform
Players not returning:
Mitch Richmond: For all the reasons given...Mitch was leaving town
Kurt Nimphius: Was fine, but has pretty much reached end of career
Johnny Moore: Another fine year as backup for us. He will do well in Atlanta
