The New Jersey Nets once again find themselves in the unfortunate position of picking early in the college draft, meaning another season was a failure. The Nets, despite being blessed with a string of #1 picks that netted them Shawn Kemp, Dennis Scott, and Dikembe Mutombo, have failed to put together anything more than a short playoff run in the last few years. Last year's disastrous season saw them move midseason to move unhappy big man Dikembe before free agency, avoiding a situation similar to that which saw star Shawn Kemp sign with another team, leaving the team with nothing for their former top pick. The team is big on Mookie Blaylock and Ken Norman, brought in in the swap for Mutombo, but it wasn't enough to turn their season around. Lucky draft balls means the Nets held on to their pick this season, but have lot their pick next season, meaning a lot rides on this pick and this year for the Nets.
The front office worked the trade lines hard, thinking that teams might want to move up and take this spot and have a shot at some of the unique talents in this draft. However, no deals were able to be finalized, and so the Nets are ready to pick. Here they come to the podium ...
"With the #3 pick in the 1995 draft, the New Jersey Nets select ....
"Bryant Reeves, center from Oklahoma State University."
With Reeves, the Nets hope to develop another big presence under the basket in the vein of current center, William Bedford. Like Bedford, Reeves has a knack for scoring, and a huge ability to draw contact and pick up the extra shot in the post. Unlike Bedford, Reeves is a dynamite rebounder. Big Country is raw when it comes to defense, used to playing against much smaller competition in college. The Nets will need to give him the time to develop if he is going to reach is potential as a NBA defender. Which might be good news for Vancouver, who hold New Jersey's pick next year. The question will be if Reeves develops quick enough to help this team win now, or if the Nets will spend another year at the bottom of the standings and get nothing to show for it.
