Game six back in LA......two teams trying to win it all for their city...for the first time in 20-year league history.
1st Quarter: A good 'offensive' quarter for both teams...something we haven't seen in this series out of the gate. Both teams held ~6 point leads..but it was a 2 point game...with the style of play more aligned towards LA ball...a hopeful sign for Laker fans. Fouls were getting called...with 18 FTs shot by teams combined....will that play into the outcome?
Quarter running totals:
ATL - LA
Pts 29 31
FG% 56 63
Rebs 4(1) 11(4)
TOs 0 2
2nd Quarter: Both teams stayed even...with Lakers a small lead for the first eight minutes.....up 42-40. Hawks then ended the Q on a 15-7 run...getting up 6 by half. Defense holds Lakers to 19pt quarter. Fans are nervous. Barkley with 13 while Brent Barry scored 12 in the half. Lakers spread the scoring as usual.....but hobbled BJ only scored three...the main offense normally.
Quarter running totals:
ATL - LA
Pts 55 49
FG% 54 58
Rebs 14(7) 16(6)
TOs 4 9
3rd Quarter: Atlanta jumped out fast...and then kept the Lakers at bay from any run. Hawks turned it over NINE times in the 3rd..yet still increased their lead by another three points, 79-70. Uncanny!
Quarter running totals:
ATL - LA
Pts 79 70
FG% 58 55
Rebs 24(8) 21(7)
TOs 13 14
4th Quarter: Desperation time, and Lakers made a mini-run to get the lead cut to six...but by mid-quarter, yet another Hawks defensive stand and good offensive efficiency had at heir lead up to 18. Lakers were helpless, and Atlanta coasted in to celebrate their first GAH title.
Quarter running totals:
ATL - LA
Pts 108 94
FG% 57 51
Rebs 38(14) 30(11)
TOs 15 18
Congrats to both teams! Really painful for Lakers to be runner-up yet again. But it appeared the Lakers just did not have the gas anymore to compete in this series. I'll say it again, from the roster looks, I would've had Atlanta way down on the list of championship caliber teams. Besides Barkley, the roster looks to be just a bunch of journeymen that would not have the ability to win it all.
But this is a team game, and if every person understands his role and plays together, then anything can happen. Hawks killed it in regular season with best home record. They faced Miami/Philly/LA which were 3 of the top four offensive teams....and shut them down (some good fortune on key injuries..but nonetheless).
Congrats Manu!
