Spurs agree. Anybody who has been around the league for yrs.....will probably recall my rants and tirades and continuous losses at the hands of the Lakers....either regular season or first round of playoff sweeps.
One major pain was BJ Armstrong, who simply wore my team out always!
So...there was two choices.....either get a Gilooly-esque thug to hit BJs knee with a lead pipe to disable him.....or to trade for him and get him on my side.
The Spurs had a dismal season...when thoughts were that we could compete.....with the depth we had in front court. Wasn't so...32 wins only.
We hope that BJ/Drazen combo can solidify the backcourt for us to greatly improve. While BJ is not a prolific passer, he does handle the ball well. And of course BJ/Drazen are lights out from the arc...so any thoughts about sagging the defense in the paint should penalize the opponent.
We hated to see Sean Elliot go....he is an all-around very good player....not one weakness in any part of his game, on either side of the court. But we needed to figure out what we can do to improve..and sometimes that means sending your best player away.
Chris Gatling is a very good inside offensive weapon..and rebounds well. He also gets to the line a lot. But we have front court depth, and the #6 pick this year looks like another big man will be most likely chosen, so we felt it was ok to deal him. The first rounder in 1998 is always tough to send away.....but I truly hope we are a playoff team, and not in the lottery...making the subsequent future player not a franchise man.
Andy from Lakers to confirm! Appreciate him letting this deal get done prior to draft clock....so we can make a conscious choice with backcourt set.

Lakers agree
After taking over this successful franchise I decided last year to give it one more shot. We made it to the playoffs, but the roster was just getting too old and had no real young player to take over in the next seasons. This year I made the hard decision to tear it down, we have no young talent and all and need every pick we can get. Getting Sean Elliott and Gatling ob board will block our cap for a while, but I don't expect us to be big player in FA anyway. And Sean Elliott was always a player I liked in RL, so welcome on board!
Thanks to the Spurs for this uncomplicated deal!
