On one end, the most physically gifted player ever to pick up a basketball, and one of Michael Jordan's biggest rivals to GOAT, wearing the green of one of the most historic hoops franchises. On the other side, a punishing, swarming defense, and a deadly dual-point guard backcourt that no one in the West could find a way to stop. Celtics/Pelicans, two of the best, most entertaining teams in the regular season, now meeting in the Finals.
Game 1 tipped off in New Orleans and the Pelicans flew to a 33-28 first period advantage. The place was rocking and it looked like rh0xxy's team was well on their way. Then the Celtics charged back to take the second quarter 23-18 and headed into the locker room down by two points. Whatever it was that Doc Rivers said in the locker room at halftime worked, because the Cs dominated the second half, Boston's margins 32-19 in the third and 33-24 in the fourth for a comfortable 113-94 road win.
Lebron James vs Gerald Wallace was the matchup of the night
New Orleans sought to neutralize Lebron James with Gerald Wallace and the battle was a great one to watch. In the end, though, James put up 35 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds and 6 steals on 14/27 shooting, 3/7 from behind the arc to Wallace's 19 points and 3 steals on 8 for 17 shooting. Boston also relied on Thomas Robinson breaking through with a 12 point/12 rebound/2 block double-double, and all five Boston starters scored 12 points or better. The biggest surprise? Louis Williams with 9 points and 4 turnovers in 9 minutes
Hard luck for the Pelicans, who couldn't do enough with Derrick Rose's 24 points and 5 rebounds on a great 10/18, 2/3 from behind the arc night, or Elton Brand's fluid 14 points, 6 rebounds and a block off the bench. Mike Conley shouldered much of the blame, shooting just 1 for 9 with a unsightly 7 turnovers, most engineered by Pablo Prigioni's 6 steals.
