YOUR TOP 10 DRAFT PICKS
Shawn Kemp
58 Games
26.4 Minutes
11.9 Points
1.6 Assist
7.0 Rebounds
0.8 Steals
1.1 Blocks
Shawn Kemp the number 1 pick of the 1989 draft had a slow start to what should be an outstanding career. His early games left a lot to the imagination as he struggled to score and got extremely out-muscled on the glass before going down to a lengthy injury. Kemp's only avenue to scoring was at the free throw line in his early games where he is very at home for a guy his size which suggests he may be an unstoppable scorer once he gets into full rythym. Kemp's middle and finish to the season was far better which bumped up his stats nicely. Chances of Kemp coming away with rookie of the year honors are ok but he is better then his stats suggest and will hopefully have far more impact in his second year.
Gary Payton
82 Games
34.5 Minutes
16.5 Points
4.7 Assists
3.0 Rebounds
1.3 Steals
0.3 Blocks
The number 2 pick Gary Payton was at home in the Bucks starting lineup right from the start and lead his rookie class in scoring, assists and steals. Like most rookies in this draft Payton's year went from strength to strength which lead to some high scoring performances and some great defensive games. Payton was trialed in his natural point guard position but the team just did not gel well and he falled to distribute the ball well to his team but he has massive shoes to fill if he is ever to take the title of number 1 PG in Milwaukee. Looks every bit the rookie of the year and was perhaps the most consistant of all rookies.
Loy Vaught
82 Games
28.6 Minutes
12.4 Points
1.7 Assists
7.5 Rebounds
0.8 Steals
0.3 Blocks
Loy Vaught the 3rd picked looks a real player. Vaught looked really good coming off the bench for the Celtics and showed good scoring and rebounding qualities and knows how to pick a players pocket. One must wonder if Vaught's stats were bolstered coming off the bench or if he would have been far more damaging as a starter playing bigger minutes. Looks a likely candidate and worthy winner but we will get a better picture of this man when he becomes the first choice power forward in Boston.
Derrick Coleman
65 Games
36.7 Minutes
13.8 Points
2.3 Assists
9.0 Rebounds
0.6 Steals
1.5 Blocks
No body loves me, everybody hates me. Im Derrick Coleman and I can play ball! Possibly should have gone number 1 after all, after so much debate about how good Coleman could be or wouldn't be he eventual fell from favor as Kemp and Payton took the spotlight. What you get with Coleman is a great athlete capable of playing big minutes whilst putting up big numbers. Looks the rebounder and shot blocker of the class and has very clean hands for a big man and can make you pay from all over the court offensively. Kings came away with a steal and Coleman may come away with a nice trophy for the cabinet after ROTY is announced.
Tyrone Hill
82 Games
33.1 Minutes
10.7 Points
1.8 Assists
8.4 Rebounds
0.7 Steals
0.5 Blocks
Number 5 Tyrone Hill. He was always looking like a good rebounder which he is, probably the best if you exclude Coleman but Hill looks like a handy scorer also who boasts an efficient .467 shooting percentage. Turns the ball over maybe a little to much but he has been a nice addition to Utah's starting lineup and looks to have a long career ahead of him but rookie of the year? No sir.
Antonio Davis
82 Games
29.7 Minutes
9.6 Points
1.8 Assists
8.0 Rebounds
0.9 Steals
1.1 Blocks
Everybody kind of raised an eyebrow when the Phoenix Suns called his name out at pick 6 but Antonio Davis can play. He has good clean hands and a nice touch shooting around the rim and from the free throw line, grabs a lot of boards and loves to send a sloppy shot back down the shooters throat. Handy, very handy and the Suns walk away knowing they have a player even if he wont win rookie of the year.
Elden Campbell
67 Games
25.9 Minutes
6.6 Points
1.0 Assists
4.7 Rebounds
0.9 Steals
1.5 Blocks
Elden Campbell at 7 was the first choice center of the class and the player that every team around pick 10 wanted. He fell to Miami who snapped him up but his season was pretty underwhelming. Campbell took too few rebounds and didnt score enough particularly for a starting center. His strength is in his shot blocking ability and he is a safe pair of hands from the charity. Like most big men he will need time to develop into a solid center but he's no chance to take the award.
Stacey Augmon
77 Games
18.3 Minutes
6.4 Points
1.2 Assists
2.0 Rebounds
0.7 Steals
0.2 Blocks
Stacey Augmon the plastic man instantly found himself in the starting lineup at Milwaukee but fell out of favor as the team struggled to put scoreboard pressure on teams. Coming off the bench he played to his strength as a rock solid defender. Probably has the sweetest jumpshot in the class but takes to few shots and is also rock solid from the free throw line but needs to develop his game more and make more effort on the boards. Wont win it!
Kendall Gill
80 Games
17.7 Minutes
8.7 Points
1.9 Assists
1.6 Rebounds
0.8 Steals
0.3 Blocks
Kendall Gill, nice addition to the depth of the New Jersey Nets at pick 9. A handy scorer with range that can play a bit of defense. Gill could probably have thrown up a decent scoring average he played more minutes but he looks set to have quite a nice career. Not a chance in hell.
Dean Garrett
82 Games
20.8 Minutes
5.3 Points
1.0 Assists
5.6 Rebounds
0.5 Steals
1.4 Blocks
Number 10, Dean Garrett. I think most of us thought he would have more of an impact but when you consider he played just 20 minutes a game perhaps his season was better then meets the eye. Garrett loves to block a shot and is a bit of a beast on the boards, I think he will thrive when the big minutes come his way and will probably be better then Granville Waiters, the current first choice center for the Blazers as time goes by. Wont win it but looks promising.
THE BEST OF THE REST
Rex Chapman
82 Games
32.4 Minutes
14.2 Points
3.0 Assists
2.4 Rebounds
0.9 Steals
0.2 Blocks
Pick 13 Rex Chapman the scorer. Remember how he single handedly carried Kentucky all the way to the final game of the championship? What a legend even if he couldn't get them over the line. Great from the free throw line, solid from beyond the arc and can pick a pocket for the steal. With some more development he could turn into 1 of the better scorers in the league. Looks a little hopeless on the defensive end but i think there may be a few teams that would take Chapman higher up the order if they had their time again. Can he win it? He has a better chance then half of the top 10 picks i say.
Alberto Herreros
72 Games
26.2 Minutes
12.0 Points
1.8 Assists
2.7 Rebounds
0.6 Steals
0.0 Blocks
Herreros, Detroits boy coming at pick 19 making him quite easily the best value draft pick of the year. A small forward with good scoring ability, helps out on the boards and can setup a team mate on the assist combined with his impressive shooting range and free throw technique make him a highly prized asset to the Detroit Pistons. He wont win it but he'll be a good player.
Alaa Abdelnaby
69 Games
16.1 Minutes
7.0 Points
1.1 Assists
4.2 Rebounds
0.5 Steals
0.3 Blocks
Of course he won't win it but he was a second round draft pick and a pretty good power forward. Scoring and rebounds off the bench, I'd take that especially when some first rounders aren't doing anything.
