Quick question:
I know we have the ability to trade future 1st round draft choices, and have it stipulated that the pick is 'lottery protected' for that trade, meaning if the pick does indeed fall into lottery, then original team keeps that pick, but must give up the following years 1st round pick unfettered.
Here is the question: Can a stipulation be made in a trade to state:
Team X trades 1st round pick (top-5 protected) to Team Y for Player ZZZ
(meaning..if pick is lottery, and lottery balls place the pick in slots 1-5..the original team retains the pick.....if the lottery balls land the pick in the remaining slot 6-9 (or whatever the amount of lottery teams are with expansion) or out of lottery, then the team that received the pick gets that years 1st round to complete the trade)??
Not sure if allowed to drill further down then simply lottery protect?
Thanks! ljw SAS

Any kind of protection can be placed and for any number of seasons. For example, Top 5 protected in 1992, Top 8 in 1993, Top 10 in 1994 and unprotected after that.
