After last getting swept in the Western Conference Finals, the Memphis Grizzlies have been searching for a brand new identity with the league reset.
Here's what the team has been doing so far in the dispersal draft.
1. Derrick Favors (auto-picked)
As one of the highest potential bigs in the game, Favors wasn't a bad pick at all with the AI first round selection. While we most definitely would've gone a different way, I've got no real complaints here.
2. Marc Gasol (auto-picked)
While not the best fit on a young squad, Gasol is still a great two-way big man who might just be the push the team needs to make a playoff run. I really would've loved to pick up another great long-term piece here (with a plentiful remaining at the spot), but alas.
3. Harrison Barnes
The young rookie with scoring potential makes a very nice long-term fit next to the two dominant big men auto-selected with the first two picks. Barnes gives the team a legit perimeter scoring threat down the line, as well as one of the highest-IQ players in the league. It would've been tough for us had Barnes not been available here.
4. Isaiah Thomas
At this point in the draft, Thomas was likely the best young PGs left in the game: exactly what the team needed. Bringing great shooting, stealing, and a nice all-around game, as well as familiarity in our system, he makes a good fit next to a guy like Barnes on the perimeter.
5. Nikola Pekovic
We swerved a bit from our path here by taking a 26-year-old center in Pekovic, who was definitely the most talented player still left. He brings a nice, efficient scoring game, as well as good rebounding ability and defense. His UFA status is a concern though, but should be no problem with the cap flexibility we have. He also may not get the minutes he needs with Gasol/Favors, but does give us the flexibility to move one of them or make deals later on.
6. Jeremy Lamb
While definitely not the ideal fit next to the Thomas/Barnes pairing, Lamb's still a rookie and should eventually develop into the team's sixth man role. I don't know how to best describe him. Somehow, the words plain and uninteresting come to mind. What he does bring though, is no glaring all-around weakness and great efficiency on the offensive end, something we really see as valuable.
7. Arnett Moultrie
With the seventh pick, we continued on our trend of choosing youngster with a rookie in Moultrie, who should be a nice long-term backup with his size and versatile game. We like his DI/IQ combination, and he's also incredibly efficient.
8. Fab Melo
Ugh, totally missed out on Zeller here, who would've been perfect, but Melo ain't a bad consolation prize. He gives us that energy guy with defense and shotblocking ability off the bench. Another rookie with a possible long-term fit on our team as a role player.
9. Luke Babbit
With just slim pickings available at this point in the draft, we went with a guy who can shoot and play some defense off the bench in Babbit. He's also a very plain and uninteresting guy, but should be able to give us some valuable wing depth with the current state of our squad.
10. Gerald Green
With the tenth pick, we went with Green, who can likely be a decent sixth man wing. He's adequate all-around and brings efficient scoring to the table.
11. Jimmer Fredette
Almost forgot this guy existed, but I like his overall upside and the fact that he's a really good outside shooter. He could probably end up in that Mo Williams role down the line.
