The 1991 Free Agency period recently started in the GAH. No big news yet, of course, as players will likely take a few days to test the market before making any rushed decisions. However, that does not mean big announcements cannot take place. The GAH Front Office made public months ago that next summer the league will see its biggest change in structure, with expansions, relocations and divisional realignments. Today, the GAH just announced which two franchises will be relocating for the 1992-93 season.
The first franchise moving will be the Kansas City Condors. One of the expansion franchises, the Condors entered the GAH in the 1985-86 season. With an overall record of 161 wins and 331 losses (32.7 % of wins), the Condors best season was in 1989-90, with a 41-41 record and a trip to the playoffs. With fans in Kansas City hoping the 1990-91 season to be a step forward, disappointment came when the team finished the season 24-58, the third worst record in the league. And where is the franchise moving to? Well, one of the original cities supporting the GAH will be back for that. The celebration of some All-Star weekends there in recent years was a sign of things to come, and finally, San Diego will be having a GAH franchise back in town: the Clippers.
And what about the second one? The first ever expansion franchise in the GAH will be moving, as Memphis will no longer be hosting GAH games beyond the upcoming season. The Pyramids, who joined the league in 1981, just needed two seasons to reach the playoffs in the 1982-83 season, but would need to wait until the 1989-90 season to make a second trip to the postseason. The franchise has an overall record of 318 wins and 502 losses (38.8 % of wins). The Pyramids relocation will see the GAH expanding to Canada, with Vancouver hosting GAH games starting in the 1992-93 season. After much deliberation, the name of the team will be changed to the Grizzlies.
Both the San Diego Clippers and the Vancouver Grizzlies will be playing in the Pacific Division. This will result in a divisional realignment, where the Phoenix Suns will be moving back to the Midwest Division, where they played since the league started in 1976 until the 1980-81 season. After their move to the Pacific in 1981, the Suns won their second GAH title. Will their comeback to the Midwest result in another championship?
The two expansion franchises will be announced in the coming weeks. All that has been leaked until now is that it will be one per conference. Stay tuned.
