The GEM agency had a rough start to the free agency period with voice messages piling up and no calls going out. After a few days all is better now and the agency is running like a well oiled machine and is getting players inked to contracts at a fast rate.
"If we got guys who appear ready to sign and are not going to get anything else, why wait? It helps us get a guy a home and helps a team out by locking in a player and getting a better read on their cap space."
So lets highlight the signings from a few days ago and ones announced today:
1. Otis Thorpe - Kansas City Condors (San Diego Clippers): Started all games last year for the Condors/Clippers last season and had good offensive numbers. The deal had the right term and money so he had to sign.
2. Dale Ellis - Atlanta Hawks: Atlanta came right out of the gate staking their claim for Ellis and Dale loved that. The deal was fair to Dale so there was no point in not making it official as quickly as possible.
3. Marques Johnson - Cleveland Cavaliers: He has been a Cavalier for life and he will be for two more seasons. He has been on the downward trend for the past 3-4 seasons he is still a fine basketball player.
4. Jon Koncak - Houston Rockets: This will be Jon's third team in three seasons but his size and defensive play are what teams love about him. Houston was the only team to call and are giving Jon more money than he has previously seen.
5. Wayne Cooper - Seattle Supersonics: Another defensive center heading West or in this case Northwest. Seattle was the only team to call and at age 34 a 2-year deal is not that bad.
Unsigned Clients
1. C Sam Bowie - Boston Celtics: Might not be a better center in the free agent market right now. Boston rode Bowie defensive ability and rebounding prowess to a hot start last season and if it were not for injuries who knows how their season would have went. Right now the team with the big offer on the table is not Boston. Surely Boston will come in with an offer at some point so Sam will wait.
2. SF Chris Morris - Kansas City Condors: Who? That was our first thought when we received our official list. Then all of the calls came in and we said wait a minute lets take a close look at this guy. He averaged 2.4 ppg last year and 5.9 on his career. The numbers are awful but it is simply a utilization issue. Chris wants to play because he knows he can play in this league and it is apparent with the number of calls that a lot of teams feel he can. Chris will continue to wait so if you have interest pick up the phone.
3. Dan Majerle - Phoenix Suns: Solid defender with high discipline and IQ should be a hot commodity (plus he can hit the 3). Shockingly he has only received 1 official offer and it was not from Phoenix.
4. James Edwards - Denver Nuggets: He might be old but the man is still big (7'0) and can still play defense and shoot the ball accurately. Nothing official has been received from anyone but Denver has said keep us in mind.
5. Bill Laimbeer - Indiana Pacers: Bill was instrumental in helping bring back-to-back titles to Indiana. He knows he is not going to start but his rebounding and tough play surely are an asset to someone.
