First Semifinal
The Runnin' Rebels of Nevada-Las Vegas obviously are one of the most potent offensive forces in college basketball. But on Saturday night, second-ranked U.N.L.V. relied on an almost air-tight defense to gain the edge against Kentucky, then rolled to an 86-74 victory. Jamal Mashburn of Kentucky, which is ranked 10th in The Associated Press's poll of sportswriter and broadcasters, opened the season game's scoring when a field goal was allowed because of a goaltending call with 64 seconds gone. The Wildcats did not score again for almost six minutes while the Runnin' Rebels were building a 13-2 lead.
U.N.L.V. had a 53-32 lead at halftime and boasted a 29-point advantage with about 10 minutes to play before Kentucky fought its way back on accurate 3-point shooting by Farmer and the overall play of Monster Mash.
Coach Pitino was impressed enough to call U.N.L.V. the best defensive college team in the nation. "No excuses, they're No. 1," he said. "They're great, the whole package."
Jerry Tarkanian, the Runnin' Rebels' coach, agreed that his team's play in the opening minutes was "the best basketball we can play," saying that "the defense was as good as it could be."

Second Semifinal
In the second game, Jon Barry scored 24 points and Kenny Anderson added 21 for Georgia Tech to guarantee the win.
Alonzo Mourning and Dikembe Mutombo scored 16 points each for Georgetown as the Hoyas lost their first game of season.
Georgetown led by 40-36 at the half but Georgia Tech, led by the hot shooting of Barry, pulled ahead and led by 62-59 with 3 minutes 37 seconds left to play.
With time running out and Georgetown trailing, 62-61, Mourning took a pass in traffic but his turnaround jumper was blocked. Mutombo grabbed the loose ball for Georgetown and drove to the basket. But Geiger established position and drew an offensive foul with 20.7 seconds left. Mutombo was fouled out.
Geiger made the first shot of the 1 and 1 but missed the second.
The Hoyas quickly pushed the ball up court and Joey Brown hit a jumper from the right side at the buzzer to tie the score.
In overtime, Yellow Jackets jumped out to a quick 67-63 lead and Barry made it 69-63 with a pair of foul shots.
Mourning was fouled at the other end and made it 69-65 with two free throws.
Georgetown missed at the other end and Kenny Anderson put the game away by scoring on a drive.

I have the feeling the two Hoyas will go #1 and #2 in the draft.

Nevada Las Vegas, with All-American forward Larry Johnson scoring eight of his 27 points in the first eight minutes, raced to a 23-9 lead and went on to a 97-85 victory Saturday at Thomas & Mack Center. "The first half we played terrible," said guard Anderson Hunt, who made four three-pointers and finished with 20 points. "But we were still up by nine (at halftime), and that gave us a boost. "We started the second half hard. We were quicker. We did a lot of things to them that they did to us in the first half." UNLV used its quickness on defense in building the early lead, converting six Georgia Tech turnovers into 10 points to take control of the game. Yellow Jackets fought back to 35-26 on John Barry's three-point basket with 6:29 remaining in the first half but could draw no closer the rest of the way. The Rebels, leading 43-34 at halftime, put Georgia Tech away with a 16-2 run that gave them a 72-47 lead with 11:54 left. Johnson's rebound basket 3 1/2 minutes later increased the lead to 84-54. "As I said before, they win with defense," Yellow Jackets Coach Bobby Cremins said of the Rebels. "They get a lot of points on defense. They do what Jerry Tarkanian wants them to do. There's not a better-coached team in America. Whatever he asks them to do, they do."

Larry Johnson could be a very good player in the GAH. Some teams may stay away from him because of size issues, but he has the talent.

So many great names here. As Manu said Johnson could be an interesting GAH prospect.
