Southland Conference (Texas-San Antonio, Louisiana-Monroe, Nicholls State, North Texas, Texas-Arlington, Stephen F. Austin, Northwestern State, Texas State, McNeese State, Sam Houston State)
Olajuwon lastname returns to NCAA Tournament
Texas-San Antonio won the Southland. Everyone knows about Hakeem (the Dream) Olajuwon, one-time soccer goalie, walk-on All American at the University of Houston and star center of the Indiana Pacers.
But it should be noted that there are two more Olajuwons having some sort of impact in basketball, although the 6-foot-10 Hakeem remains unchallenged as the tallest branch on the family tree. Taju Olajuwon, 23, is a 6-7 junior center at the University of Texas San Antonio. Afis Olajuwon, 19, is a 6-3 sophomore swingman at Alvin Community College.
Taju transferred after two unhappy years at Indiana State, where he was kept out of action because of NCAA academic restrictions. Afis led his JC team in scoring this season. However, reports are that neither player will make anyone forget about big brother any time soon.

Tanoka Beard. It's been a long time since I heard that name. For those familiar with European basketball in the late 90's and early 2000's ... you may see him here in the GAH.

Big West Conference (Nevada-Las Vegas, Cal State Fullerton, Fresno State, Long Beach State, New Mexico State, Pacific, San Jose State, UC-Irvine, UC-Santa Barbara, Utah State)
It was that rare occasion when Nevada Las Vegas' invincibility was being challenged, but Coach Jerry Tarkanian knew what had to be done.
"We insisted that we look for Larry (Johnson) to start the second half," Tarkanian said after the top-ranked Rebels had broken away from a one-point halftime lead and defeated Long Beach State, 87-71, in the title game of the Big West Conference tournament Sunday in the Long Beach Arena.
Led by Johnson, who scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half and was named the tournament's most valuable player. And Tarkanian went on a roll himself during a postgame news conference, which turned into a kind of comedy hour as the coach took some shots at the NCAA.
While answering a question, Johnson was handed an envelope.
"That's for winnin' the tournament," the All-American forward said with a laugh.
"That's his meal money," said Tarkanian. "Of course the NCAA probably says we can't eat after a game."
But the coach was merely warming up. "I'm to the point where I'm not going to shut up anymore," Tarkanian said. "I'm just starting. I try to be nice to them, I really do. I try to be nice until somebody makes me mad."
The rest of games :
(1)UNLV - (8)Pacific 89-41 (4)New Mexico State - (5)UC-Santa Barbara 74-68 (2)Long Beach State - (7)Utah State 61-47 (3)Cal State Fullerton - (6)UC-Irvine 78-65 UNLV - New Mexico State 84-63

UNLV - Long Beach State 87-71

Southwest Conference (Baylor, Houston, Rice, Southern Methodist, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Christian, Texas Tech)
Houston won the regular season of Southwest without losses and Tournament.
Here the first team of the Conference :
David Wesley (Rice) Anthony Goodwire (Houston) Carl Herrera (Houston) Sam Mack (Houston) Bo Outlaw (Houston)
Midwestern Collegiate Conference (Butler, Dayton, Detroit Mercy, Evansville, Loyola (IL), Xavier)
Brian Grant was the best player and his team Xavier won.
Atlantic 10 Conference (Massachusetts, Duquesne, George Washington, Rhode Island, Rutgers, Saint Joseph's, St. Bonaventure, Temple, West Virginia)
2 teams in NCAA Tournament, Temple and UMass played Conference Final. Massachussetts won 61-53 :
McCoy led three double-digit UMass scorers, with 18. Harper Williams had 15 points, to go along with nine rebounds and five blocks. The Minutemen simply crushed Temple off the boards, 45-30. In the second half particularly, the Owls could not get any second-chance opportunities. And UMass's sticky man-to- man defense wasn't giving Temple too many makable first shots.
Temple wound up trying 62 field goals, to 44 for the Minutemen. But each finished with 20 baskets and Temple posted its lowest point total of the season. UMass shot 24-for-32 from the foul line, which proved to be the difference. Eddie Jones "led" Temple with 13 points in 35 minutes off the bench. But the Owls, who turned the ball over only eight times, got two points in 19 foul-plagued minutes from top scorer Mik Kilgore, and eight points (six below his average) on 15 shots from Aaron McKie, who at least pulled down nine rebounds.

Brian Grant was a big time rebounder. Another interesting player is Clarence Weatherspoon. Let's see how many GM's put his talent above his size come draft time.

Another guy ...in between a Rodman (defense/reb) and Barkley (off/reb) ....lacking height. He had a great early career with sixers IRL. ljw SAS
