With about ten games or so for most teams to end the regular season, the GAH Front Office announced which two new franchises will be entering the league this summer. More than a year ago, it was announced that the GAH would see his current 25-team structure expanded to 27 teams. This would be the third expansion in the league, with the expansion draft taking place right after the rookie draft. As with past expansion processes, each current GAH franchise will have to leave two items, either players under contract or first round picks, unprotected in the expansion draft. However, only one of those items could be potentially selected by the new franchises.
The new Eastern Conference franchise will be the Charlotte Hornets, which will join the Central Division. With the historically successful basketball programs in North Carolina, the owners of the new franchise are expecting the success to translate well to the pro game. As for the Western Conference, it will be the Midwest Division which will have a new member: the Minnesota Timberwolves. While not as successful in the college game as North Carolina, Minnesota also had his glory days at the end of the 70's. The pro franchise will look to bring that excitement back to the state.
As with expansions past, the new franchises will be holding picks #4 and #5 of both rounds in the rookie draft, with the order yet to be determined. The franchise picking second in the rookie draft will then be picking first in the expansion draft, which will feature alternate selections.
