The 1990 draft was looked at with great scepticism but a close look at the 1990 draft reveals a much different picture. The 1990 draft has gone far beyond just producing players that hit the score sheets hard! Sure we have scorers but we also have a rebounding machine and a shot blocking specialist. Wise GM's of the league predicted some good role players to enter the league via the draft but none would have predicted the instant impact guys like Jason Williams and Duane Causwell would have or the star Eric Murdock would be at pick 15. Here's a look at the standout rookies of the 1991 season, and let me tell you this may take a while because amazing picks where taken from deep in this draft. WHO IS YOUR ROTY?
ERIC MURDOCK ROTY?
PICK 4
Strong considerations have to be made and he may add a ROTY trophy to his 3pt shootout trophy from the all-star weekend.
PICK 8
GEORGE MURESAN
ERIC MURDOCK ROTY?
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR PREDICTION
ERIC MURDOCK
MINS - 27.8
PPG - 15.1
APG - 5.2
SPG - 1.8
Pick 15...Pick 15!! Im glad the the GM of the Pheonix Suns did not let Eric Murdock's amazing year go unnoticed like Tim Legler's rookie year did. I believe the 1 liner was "Eric Murdock is god". Well Eric may not actually be god but an amazing year he has had. 1.8 steals per game is good enough to be the 7th best in the league ahead of the great Alvin Robinson! To add to this amazing feat Murdock poured in a seriously good scoring average as he continues the recent trend of score 1st point guards. Eric's shooting range, touch around the rim and clean use of the free throw line make him a serious scoring threat but 1 must ask, just 40 starts and 27 minutes a game? For my mind a point guard of the future and must come close to ROTY.THE NUMBER 1 PICK
DENNIS SCOTT
MINS 30.9
PPG 15.6
APG 2.3
RPG 3.0
SPG 0.8
The 2nd consecutive number 1 pick of the New Jersey Nets was Dennis Scott. When it comes to perimeter shooting the Nets walked out with the cream of the crop. Dennis Scott averaged 15.6ppg in his rookie and he wasn't shy in jacking up from beyond the arc at a very efficient rate of almost 40%. Standing at 6'8" as a small forward a few extra rebounds is the area of his game he needs to work on. A scoring threat with range is what the Nets have added to their arsenal of youth. Consider....Scott, Kemp, Mount Motumbo/Zo. Who cares if Scott doesn't go home with a trophy, get a PG that loves to pass!THE #1 WE ALL THOUGHT
STEVE SMITH
MINS 24.1
PPG 8.9
He went number 2. Some thought Smith would go number, I did and there was a some discussion about the probability of it happening. Smith ended up getting picked at 2 by the 76ers who wisely chose to trade Smith mid season in a deal that saw he and Karl Malone sent to the Miami Heat. Smith as a number 2 pick i think ended badly. Smith has no real area of expertise, not a great scorer and poor defender. How his career will develop may be interesting but his rookie year was not the best and what he showed in the 24 minutes of game time he got is not enough to earn him a starting role on most teams in the league.PICK 3
DALE DAVIS
Picked at 3 by the Pyramids. Can grab a rebound and score a little from inside. May develop into a solid player. Pick 3? BORING NEXT!PICK 4
NICK ANDERSON
MINS 36.7
PPG 16.3
APG 3.2
RPG 3.8
SPG 1.3
Detroit got Anderson at pick 4 which leads to the assumption that the Detroit GM can spot talent. Sure Anderson got major minutes, the most of any rookie but he also managed to start every game. Durable much? 16.3ppg is rock solid when you share a roster with Reggie Lewis, Anderson is very good shooting the ball from anywhere on the court and can play defense. Extra rebounds and steals from a guard that can score make Anderson a respected rookie and a steal for Detroit even as a 4th pick.Strong considerations have to be made and he may add a ROTY trophy to his 3pt shootout trophy from the all-star weekend.
BRIAN WILLIAMS & ROBERT HORRY
2 players that will have long careers in GAH. Williams picked at 5 by the Spurs was a regular part of San Antonio's rotation before being traded to Cleveland. The undersized center has a solid game at both ends of the court. Robert Horry like Williams is good at both ends, particularly the defensive end and will be a handy player in years to come. As a PF you would expect more output on the glass and scoring in the paint then Horry delivers but no-one can deny his defensive ability averaging 1.7 BPG. Cant see ROTY landing here.PICK 8
GEORGE MURESAN
MINS 29.0
PPG 8.5
RPG 7.5
BPG 2.0
George may be the ugliest man to ever step onto a GAH court but i do like his game. Can score a little and will eat you alive on the defensive glass. Capable of huge hauls of rebounds and "keeping shit out of the Knicks house" George is a worthy choice at pick 7, he may not come close to ROTY but every team needs a rock solid anchor standing in the key way, George provides that.DUANE "3.4" CAUSWELL
PICK 8
MINS 30.0
RPG 8.7
BPG 3.4
SPG 1.0
PPG 6.1
Meet Mr Defense. Pick 8 landed one of the best shot blockers in the league for the Condor's. This guy kept the glass nice and shiney all year long for the Condor's starting and finishing every game of the year. Defensive minded GM's will be lining up for his services in a few years time and i dont think anyone can argue that Causwell is the premier defensive player of the 1990 draft. In Duane's rookie year he ranked 4th in blocked shots behind Patrick Ewing, David Robinson and Hakeem Olajuwon and wasn't far off making the top 10 in rebounds either. Can very easily see this guy as the 1991 rookie of the year for his defensive effort alone and will no doubt end up on many All-Defensive teams during his career. An absolute jet!GREG ANTHONY
MINS 31.2
PPG 12.2
APG 6.5
SPG 0.8
A really good PG picked up by the Houston Rockets here. A pass 1st point with a well rounded game who likes to play D. The assist leader of the class helped lead the Rockets to a playoff birth which must mean his GM has great confidence in his ability and will no doubt be a future member of the Rockets next push for greatness. Anthony would easily be worthy of a pick high up the draft order and is another great example of teams finding very good players deeper in the draft. LONGLEY, FOX, STARKS, DUMAS
Iv met Luke Longley a number of times., cracking guy......Fox can score.....Starks, disappointing year. Played just 19 minutes a game but i wish he was as great as I thought he would be when he was in college.....Dumas, who gives a shit i want to talk about JAYSON WILLIAMS!!!JASON WILLIAMS!!!!!
RPG 10.4
PPG 8.9
When i scouted this guy i was sure he would be atleast a top 10 pick. A rebounding machine that loves the defensive end found himself at home alongside Derrick Coleman at the Kings. Williams found himself, like Murdock and Causwell on a top 10 list of league leaders this time in rebounds where he found himself ranked 6th at the end of the season behind some legendary GAH players. I guess the Knock on Jayson Williams' game is his touch around the offensive rim but Williams will most likely see himself on a starting roster as long as he is making it onto the list if league leaders in rebounding.
