The New Jersey Nets heard from a lot of teams very interested in trading in for this pick and having a chance at one of the biggest (!) talents of the draft. Perhaps it would have been wise. Despite back to back #1 picks, great free agent talent, the Nets have continued to stumble. Every year the Nets management says this is the piece that will complete the puzzle and yet every year they fail. Will this year be any different?
Perhaps not, but the management is excited to add a player which has the league, and hopefully the fans, so excited. While Shawn Kemp has yet to bring his electric college performances to the big leagues, the hope is that he will continue to develop into a powerful two-way player. Dennis Scott has shown that he can bring the heat from long-distance, and Kendall Gill is proving a solid glue guy. The Nets have been very pleased with the development of William Bedford at center, but they see no choice but to make room at that position for their newest player.
With the #2 pick, the New Jersey Nets select
Dikembe Mutombo out of Georgetown
Clearly the next best talent in the class, Dikembe could be the next Tree Rollins, a player the Nets management has long admired. Next to Kemp down low, Mutombo won't be responsible for offense, but the two could form the most imposing defensive duo outside of Indiana. The Nets are happy to welcome Dikembe to New Jersey and look forward to introducing him to the fans.
