Spurs organization has talked with Mitch about a diminished 'court time' role, and as expected, he is not willing to accept that role. We therefore have looked to move him to an ORG where he will seem to get his minutes and be a happy team player. Spurs on the other hand get yet another big man that is effective on both sides of the court, and can score. (We need about eight bodies to handle Shaqramento alone...as well as the 'Denver Skyline') Melvin will get plenty of minutes in the front court rotation....and hopefully help groom the younger bigmen on the roster.
Thanks to Knicks for easy negotiations. They will confirm with their reasons. (FYI..the '25%' rule of salary diff is met above)

Knicks Management are delighted to bring Mitch Richmond to the Madison Square Garden. With veteran Small Forward Mark Aquirre failing to return the GM calls during FA the Knicks knew they needed to move and add some scoring power and that is just what Mitch Richmond will bring. Mitch will slot straight into the starting rotation getting the playing time he craves.
Mel Turpin had asked Management if a Trade was possible as he knew the reins where to be handed over to Derrick Coleman and when the Spurs called to ask about his status all parties agreed a move would be a win/win situation.
Everybody at The Knicks organisation would like to thank the Spurs for the quick and painless Trade.
