San Antonio Spurs back in the lottery against all attempts to be playoff caliber, and failing miserably. 32-50 record was without any significant player injuries to make excuses for the losses.
Eleven players still under contract...and salary cap still used up, the hopes of possibly revamping the team is not easily done. We desire to upgrade the backcourt....as we feel that is where we need help. The draft doesn't have a plethora of playmakers though. Prior to draft, the Spurs agreed in a deal with Lakers to get two veteran backcourt players, in BJ Armstrong and Drazen Petrovic. We had to give up the teams best player in Sean Elliot, and Chris Gatling, as well as future 1st rounder.
That deal then shifts the focus....with looking at maybe a SF or a future C to replace Sampson.
The decision came down to two players, but we have to go the route that makes most sense for the team:
With the 6th pick in the 1997 draft, the San Antonio Spurs select:
Marcus Camby, C, UMass
Marcus is a raw talent that is a pure paint defender, in the same mold as Hornets Dikembe Mutumbo---Rebounding-Blocking-Defending.
Losing Gatling, and having 15yr vet Ralph Sampson on bald tires, means this will truly help Spurs defend in the paint for years to come. Durability is a question mark, but we had to pull the trigger on Marcus.
Hopefully this turns out to be a marriage made in heaven.

If not Duncan that at least Camby. Remember that they were compared a lot during their last college season

I expected him to be drafted way earlier - very solid big man

As long as he stays healthy he can be a difference maker.
