San Antonio season has plenty of firsts for the franchise under current GM Wickert's tenure (started late 1980)
- 1st Midwest division crown
- 1st 50+ win season
- 1st time seeded higher then 5th..and home court advantage (#2 seed)
So for a team that was maybe a predicted .500 squad, is their any pressure on them to now continue on firsts....like win their first playoff series(under this regime)?
A tall order (pun intended), as they face the Shaqramento Kings...and the rookie phenom Shaquille O'Neal. Regular season had both teams win their home games.....so the home court advantage could be key!
TALE OF THE TAPE
Spurs Kings
97.3 Pts/G 98.7
94.1 PtsA/G 99.5
46.6% FG% 47.1%
44.5% FGA% 45.6%
36.5% 3pt% 36.5%
33.7% 3ptA% 35.3%
41.6 Reb/G 40.8
24.3 Ast/G 25.3
6.1 Blk/G 6.2
7.5 Stl/G 7.1
15.3 TO/G 13.7
Position Breakdown
Spurs Kings
C * On paper Turpin/Gatling equal what Shaq/Schintzius output is. Key is if Shaq can get both Spurs into foul trouble.
* F * Calling it a wash...both have scorers (Mills/Ceballos) and defense (Brown/Horry) Depth maybe to Kings
* G * Again think a wash. Think Vern Fleming in depth might be a key if Spurs want success.
* Chem If this matters, this is where Spurs have a big edge.....play as a unit which brought the success. Kings have 10 #1 guys (in each players minds). Hopefully Popovich can capitalize on that.
I think this might go seven. Turpin and Gatling have to play the 48 minutes against Shaq to not have the Spurs dig deeper in bench. Both of those players are needed for scoring as well. Terry Mills has the floor to try and land a huge contract next year, by being 'prime time' in the post-season. He has tough defenders to matchup against, so it will be hard. Lester Conner needs to frustrate rookie Kenny Anderson...forcing bad plays and turnovers. PJ Brown and Bruce Bowen need to get back to early season form, and lockdown the Kings Wings.
Hope we find a way to win a series.
