Durant, Henson Take First Honors
Kevin Durant says Gatorade helps him win the game
The first Player and Rookie of the Month were announced recently, and no surprises were had in either case. Brooklyn's Kevin Durant took home Player of the Month honors thanks to his league-leading 36.9 points and 31.7 PER, the latter just 0.1 over the Boston Celtics' Lebron James. At 40.7 minutes a game, Durant also ranks second in the league in MPG behind Detroit's Deron Williams. The Nets star is terrific in his shooting as well - 52.4% and 42.5% behind the arc, 80.4% from the free throw line, putting him in the flirting with 50/40/90 club. Let's not also forget the 6.5 rebounds, 1.9 steals and 1.5 blocks or the 81.4% drive stop rate, 3.5 TOFC, or 0.8 PA/SF.
Want more evidence as to the importance of Durant to the title-contending Nets? That 36.9 points a game is over double the next Net - Kevin Martin's 15.7 - and accounts for 32.4% of Brooklyn's points on any given night.
John Henson outplayed teammate Anthony Davis in the first month
Then there's Rookie of the Month John Henson, who surprised everyone by being better than #1 overall dispersal draft pick Anthony Davis. His 12.9 points (3rd), 7.3 rebounds (2nd), 2.1 blocks (2nd), 52.5% shooting (1st), and 15.9 PER (2nd) make him the clear candidate as the most well-rounded first year player. Only Indiana's Damian Lillard has a strong case for competing with Henson right now, and that's undercut by the fact Henson is putting these stats up in just 26.7 minutes a game. On a per 36 basis, Henson would have 17.5 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks to Lillard's 16.2 points, 7.4 assists, and 1.1 steals.
Indeed, Henson winning Rookie of the Year over the preseason's heavily favored Davis and Lillard would come as a major shock, but it's been one of the most exciting storylines of the young season.
