The 1991 GAH Finals finally arrived. That is what all teams and players are here for. This time, the stage was set for a first time meeting in the Finals between two historical franchises which had their ups and downs throughout league's history. The Chicago Bulls, winners of the 1988 Championship, came to the final series with a 12-1 record, after sweeping the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round, defeating in five games the Atlanta Hawks in the second round and sweeping the Washington Bullets in the Eastern Conference Finals. On the other hand, the road for the Golden State Warriors was much different. The Oakland based franchise returned to the biggest stage after 14 years, since losing the first ever GAH Finals series against the Philadelphia 76ers in 1977. The series also featured a bonus: the story of Michael Jordan and Patrick Ewing, two All-Star and former DPOY's, with Ewing also being the reigning MVP, who were traded for each other in the summer of 1986.
The folks at United Center were hoping to see their team prevail, and the Bulls came up firing from the very first second. They had a 14-point lead after just 12 minutes. Things were not looking good for the Warriors, and the second quarter just saw the gap increase: 62-39 at halftime. Chicago's suffocating defense had the Warriors completely out of the game. The second half saw a more balanced game, with the visiting team winning the last two quarters, but it was certainly not even close. The Bulls opened the series with a convincing 109-92 win, holding Golden State to 39.7 % shooting from the field.
Jordan led the Bulls with 29 points and 8 assists, making 20 trips to the free throw line. Despite shooting a poor 5 of 14 from the field, Jordan's ability to go to the line and play defense was key for the Bulls. Surprisingly, it was defensive specialist Alton Lister who appeared next to Jordan in the scoring department. The veteran big man scored 23 points and added 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 blocks and 1 steal. Definitely not the kind of game you would expect from him. His partner in the paint, two-time GAH champion Tree Rollins, had 17 points, 17 rebounds, 4 blocks and 2 assists, while his old two-time championship-mate, Norm Nixon, had 13 points and 10 assists. Also scoring in double figures for the Bulls was Sarunas Marciulionis with 16 points.
Jordan and Ewing facing each other.
Larry Nance led the Warriors with 22 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 blocks. Small forward was the only spot were the visitors won the battle. Ewing had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, but he just shot 2 of 10 from the field. Point guard Mark Jackson had 16 points and 7 assists, while Kevin McKenna added 14 points off the bench. Detlef Schrempf was the fifth Warrior to score in double figures with 10 points.
The series will resume tomorrow with game two. The Warriors will have to improve in order to have a chance. The team's backup center, Will Perdue, is with a sore leg.
