Spurs were a quiet org up until ~24 hours left until trade deadline, and then made a flurry of moves to possibly help the remainder of this season, and really setup a exciting off season.
Players sent:
C Olden Polynice - really didn't get a chance to play lot of minutes, and wasn't all that happy about it. Was stuck behind better playing big men
SF James Worthy - James really did everything right for us, and won the reserve SF role behind Terry Tyler....ahead of Ken Norman. Played well with second team and Vern Fleming.
SF Brad Sellers - Brad was with the Spurs for six seasons...and was another that probably could contribute, but never found minutes with Nance/Wilkins previous seasons, and then Tyler/Worthy this year.
All three had a hot commodity...a contract through next year, which is an expansion year. Teams wanted to have flexibility in the required two unprotected slots. We had 12 players signed through next season, so this was an easy decision.
(*Terry Tyler was almost moved to a top tier team, but the GMs couldn't get agreement done in time)
New Spurs:
PF Tom Hammonds - (signed with open roster spot) Was with the Spurs last year, he is a quiet player that can come in when called upon to play hard. Good team player. Will not see much time unless injuries come into play.
SG Vernon Maxwell - (signed with open roster spot) Was looked at in FA, but ran out of roster slots. A true 3 pt gunner...that doesn't know of a shot he won't take. He will be inactive though as well unless injuries come into scope. Could see some time when we have ability to play deeper bench and rest stars.
SG Otis Birdsong - A real excellent find for the Spurs....who have been using Vern Fleming in the PG/SG reserve role, one which he has excelled in for us.....and could be our team's MVP to date. But Otis is a true professional...was the Nets marquee player for years, and got them a championship..and even with his age is a guy that can control a game on offense. This really allows Pop to drop Richmond's minutes to a lesser load. He has been logging 40mpg mostly, and getting small dings off and on. This should let Mitch play ~34 minutes..and Otis can step in and really we shouldn't miss a beat. Mitch has had foul trouble games as well, and now this isn't as much a issues we feel, if Otis has to play 30 minutes or more.
The even better news is that the Spurs have 9 roster spots signed through next year...and have people they can dangle in the expansion without much loss. But with the moves we now will have 18m under cap before draft (sans any unpronounced players, which might only be Richmond).
This should allow us to play in the HUGE market next year. Between the draft and FA, there will be THREE SEVEN-FOOT HOYAS to be had!!! Plus a 'Dream', or Rice, or UTEP-2-step, Larry Legend, Sir Chuck, Divac, Petro, Mook, Mull, Kuk, Divac, NeverNervous, Price, Alvin, Oscar, Cliffy, Worm, HotRod, Sik, Sleepy-eyed Perk,......etc etc. Yes many will re-up where they are....but when they have to pay MAX...then dollars get slim....and thats where Spurs want to swoop in!
We also have two 1sts and three 2nds to use in negotiations.
Better yet...we are winning and right now looking to be playoff bound, although a long way to go. Getting a good season helps for the high PFWs out there!
